Florida’s diverse agriculture industry is central to the Sunshine State’s economy, environment, and vibrant heritage. Agriculture is Florida’s 2nd largest industry, with more than 300 commodities produced on 44,703 farm operations in the state. Nursery floriculture is the number one agriculture commodity in the state and Florida ranks first in production of bell peppers, grapefruit, Valencia oranges, sugarcane, fresh market tomatoes, and watermelons and second in strawberries, sweet corn, and oranges.
While visiting the Sunbelt Ag Expo, come see for yourself how understanding the history of Florida agriculture combined with present-day research will aid in growing Florida’s future.
Upon entering the Spotlight State building, attendees will be greeted by an immersive “Fresh From Florida” experience. A theater presentation, hands-on activities, handouts, samples, and more can be found throughout interactive exhibits as visitors step through Florida agriculture’s past, present, and future.
Past: Florida’s agriculture history is one of resilience, adaptation, and innovation. Join us for a special historical exhibit that will showcase the rich heritage and humble beginnings of our agriculture industry. At the end of the presentation, visitors will have the chance to discover archived agricultural materials and photos of a simpler time.
Present: Modern practices boost efficiency and promote sustainability when faced with ever changing markets. Agriculture and agribusinesses currently contribute more than $213.8 billion to the Florida’s economy. Of the 42 million acres that comprise the state of Florida, 26 million are utilized by farms and forests. This exhibit will feature sensory stations, educational displays and giveaways.
Future: The future of farming in Florida is challenging, yet promising, through the adoption of sustainable agriculture and conservation. An integral part of this future is Florida’s Rural and Family Lands Protection Act which aims to preserve agriculture lands by acquiring permanent conservation easements, ensuring that these lands remain productive for generations to come. Throughout this exhibit, enjoy speaking with Future Farmers of America and 4-H youth leaders and learn about how they shape the next generation of farming. Also featured within the exhibit, will be pieces of technology integral to the future potential of precision agriculture.
Join us as Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture, Wilton Simpson, welcomes visitors truck-side for a special meet and greet! There will be additional activities that celebrate Florida agriculture including a kids’ corner that offers children an opportunity to create a special craft from the Sunshine State exhibit.
Throughout Florida’s exhibit, attendees can sample flavors from the Sunshine State thanks to our “Fresh From Florida” Chef Justin and industry partners! Visitors are also invited to relax outdoors alongside a sensory garden. If sitting in a garden is not for you, outdoor games will be available as well. Before leaving, be sure to snap a photo in front of the beautiful Florida succulent wall provided by the Florida Nursery Growers and Landscape Association.
“Fresh From Florida” is thankful for the many organizations like the Florida Farm Bureau, the Florida Federation of Fairs and so many more that have come together to make the Spotlight State a success while supporting those who work in acres and not hours.
