Today, they marked the return of the Southeastern Hay Contest at the Sunbelt Ag Expo, a significant event that brings together hay farmers from across the southeastern United States. The winners were announced during the 2024 Opening Ceremonies, celebrating the hard work and dedication of those who strive to produce the highest quality hay and baleage. With a record-breaking 496 entries this year, the contest showcased the high standards of forage quality that these farmers uphold, reflecting their commitment to agriculture.
The Southeastern Hay Contest is structured around several competitive categories, including Alfalfa Hay, All Other Legume Hay, Cool Season Annual Grass Hay, Warm Season Annual Grass Hay, Grass Baleage, Legume Baleage, and the prestigious Grand Prize, which is awarded for the highest overall relative forage quality (RFQ) score. These categories highlight the diverse types of hay produced in the region and emphasize southeastern farmers’ expertise and innovative practices.
Farmers work hard throughout the growing season to achieve the highest RFQ, a critical measure that assesses the nutritional value of the forage. The contest serves as a platform for these farmers to showcase their best products and promote the importance of high-quality forage.
Winners in the top three positions of each category are awarded cash prizes generously sponsored by organizations such as R.W. Griffin, Corteva, Southeast Agriseeds, and many others. Additionally, the overall winner, determined by the highest RFQ score, receives a special prize from Massey Ferguson. This includes choosing new farming equipment and a $2,000 cash prize, recognizing their achievement, and supporting their future farming endeavors.
This year’s standout winners included John Carter from McAlpin, Florida, who won the Overall winner prize and first place in the Legume + Grass Mixed Hay category. Other prominent winners included Wally Millsap, Beeson Farms, Elberta Hay Co., Cline Farms, Jim Galloway, Smith Farms, Leikri Farms, and Walter Farms, all of whom earned top honors in their respective categories.
The Southeastern Hay Contest is essential for recognizing farmers while fostering community and collaboration. As agriculture evolves, it highlights the crucial role of high-quality forage in sustainable agriculture and showcases farmers’ dedication. This year’s success is a testament to the hard work and passion of the Southeast’s hay farming community, ensuring that the tradition of quality continues for future generations.
