Rural health is a significant public health concern that affects individuals, families, and communities throughout the United States. Access to quality health care is essential to maintaining a healthy population, yet residents of rural areas frequently encounter obstacles that make receiving medical care difficult.

Agricultural workers in the industry face occupational hazards that heighten the need for accessible care. Operating heavy machinery and working with livestock, agricultural chemicals, and other equipment increases the risk of serious injury.

Extended time outdoors further exposes workers to extreme temperatures, particularly during Georgia’s hot and humid summers. Heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heatstroke, are significant safety concerns for those who work outdoors.

Then, raising awareness and expanding access to health resources are important steps toward addressing these concerns.

The Sunbelt Ag Expo plays a valuable role in this effort by giving farmers and residents of the surrounding region a convenient opportunity to be screened for health concerns while attending an event already central to their profession.

PCOM’s building at Sunbelt is all about the people who feed our communities.

Inside the PCOM building, visitors could explore five interactive learning zones, each one packed with ideas for living and working well on the farm. The interactive learning zones include: Built for the Long Haul, Fuel, Heat and Environment, From Soil to Cells, Focus, Recovery and Endurance, and lastly, Farm Families and the Future.

The fun, however, does not stop with the adults.

PCOM South Georgia’s kids zones were full of age-appropriate activities that make learning about healthy living, farm safety, and nutrition fun. Their health education programs can also inform rural residents about disease prevention, workplace safety, and available medical resources.

Communities can contribute by supporting local clinics, expanding telehealth services, and connecting residents with providers. Telehealth may be particularly beneficial for those who live far from medical facilities, although unreliable internet access and limited technology remain obstacles in some rural areas.

By sharing information about available health resources, recognizing the importance of both physical and mental well-being, and inviting the whole family to take part, PCOM South Georgia is lifting up the importance of rural health and helping the next generation of farmers and visitors to grow up strong, healthy, and ready to lead.

By recognizing the unique needs of rural communities and supporting efforts to improve access to care, communities can help ensure that those who support agriculture have the resources to live healthier lives.
